Why I Didn't Have A Themed Wedding

When I started planning our wedding after we set a date. I was obsessed with The Great Gatsby and the 1920s era. So of course I immediately went on Pinterest and started pinning a lot of ideas. Ever since I got engaged, I always talked about having purple, charcoal, and it being vintage. So I decided to keep all of the plans a secret and only a few knew what I was planning. Halfway through wedding planning, I realized that I was veering off the whole "theme" but the more I thought about it, the more I didn't care. I actually didn't want a theme. So I just combined everything that I liked and made it work. I kept things really simple, but elegant. I still didn't let anyone know what we were planning because I didn't want people coming to my wedding expecting a certain theme. Even the invites we sent were a cream/pearl color...with gold glitter thrown in there for a little surprise ;)

I really think a wedding should be about the couple and what reflects them. Of course there's nothing wrong with having a theme wedding, but don't get so caught up in a theme that you forget what the day is truly about. I decided that I wanted our wedding to truly reflect us and I wanted people to leave our wedding feeling a sense of love that Caleb and I have for each other and just being able to relax and enjoy themselves. On our invites I labeled Formal Wear Required, just so people would dress up and I knew people expected an extremely formal reception. But it was more laid back which might have surprised some, but that was my idea anyways. We had warm soup and sandwiches, along with hot coffee and tea. I wanted people to feel warm and almost at home. Because that's how I wanted to feel. I hate going to weddings and you feel like you're required to sit proper, use all the right utensils...and there's just way to much fuss in weddings these days. I didn't want any part of that at all.

In the months prior to the wedding, I collected so much wedding decor that I was completely overwhelmed with stuff. But it was given to me by such kind hearted people who wanted to help out. So the day before the wedding, while decorating the reception. I didn't have any specific look in mind. I just wanted to start decorating and see what we could come up with. And honestly, I'm so glad. Because I really loved how everything was decorated and it just came all together beautifully.

I'm going to be making my Official Wedding Board Ideas on pinterest public, so people can get a glimpse of the things I had in mind while planning. Find it here! It's so neat to see how your own wedding turns out after months of planning.
I wouldn't change anything about my wedding. I still think about that day all the time and I can't help but smile. To see pictures of my day, part 1 and part 2 are up!

Cheers!

Best Day Ever: Part 1

Best Day Ever

December 31st, 2014

The day we became husband and wife.

Where do I even begin?! Ever since I was a little girl I always wanted to get married. But I never had a specific idea in my head of what I wanted my wedding to look like. I do know that I didn't ever see myself having a huge, over the top wedding. Even though growing up I was the ultimate girly girl and now I enjoy the finer things in life. But that's not how I wanted my wedding to be. I wanted to be surrounded by close family and friends, so Caleb and I decided that we would have a small wedding. We cut our guest list down to strictly family and our closest friends. And I don't regret it at all. I remember every single person who was there. Yes, the day seemed like a blur, but I remember almost every moment of the day. Which I'll say over and over again of just how amazing it was. Everyone who gets married always says their wedding was the best (which they should!) but our wedding was the best and I wouldn't have changed a thing.

We had an amazing photographer that captured all of the details of the day. People always say they regret not hiring a photographer, and I'm so glad that she was available at the last minute. And captured our day. Check out Lauren Elizabeth Photography, she has some pictures of the wedding up on her site too.  We have so many wedding pictures that I could post them all, but I won't. I'll post a handful (or two!)

Throughout the whole wedding planning process, I kept most of the details a secret. I didn't want people to know what we had planned, but more importantly I didn't want people coming to our wedding looking for a certain theme. I'm so over "themed" weddings. Which I'll do a whole other post on that topic..so sit tight!

In the meantime, here's a glimpse into one of the best days of my life...

Caleb and I decided to write our own vows. Best decision ever.
So I got keepsake books to keep them in

My amazing group of girls, they all have always been there for me and I couldn't have imagined my day without them.

Our little Hemmi wanted to be a part of the pictures.

I had to do a first look with my dad. I'm such a daddy's girl and wanted this moment captured.
